Recent Work/Double Diamond

Here are two examples from a shoot I did over the Holidays for Double Diamond (Black Diamond Sportswear). These photos will be used as category openers in the 2012 Double Diamond catalog & website. Much Thanks to Steve Wallace & family for opening their home and yard for the shoot, the models for their ability to hike and keep smiling in the crisp Vermont air & to Rich Morin for his Art Direction.

branching out

I’ve been shooting photos for almost half my life now.
About a year ago I felt the need to expand my skill set beyond the still photo.

Being a partner in PowderJet Snowboards has allowed me to work on some graphic design projects. So, I’ve been learning how to use Illustrator & come up with ideas for our brand.

When I worked for Transworld Snowboarding Magazine, I used to write music reviews, intros, and captions. So, I’ve started writing again and am keeping a book of new projects/ideas.

Now, my latest adventure has been filming and editing video. I don’t know why I resisted for so long, but after filming “The Antler Finds You” (a 3.5 minute film about hiking with a friend and being in the wilderness); I’m excited to tackle bigger projects.

My passion is still photography, but I feel it’s time to create in more mediums.

The Antler Finds You

For the past three or four years I’ve thought about whether I should try my hand at filming. I made a lot of excuses against the case to go out and film. Then, about a month ago I ignored the excuses and started documenting hikes with my dog in the woods near our home. After 8 or 9 days I had gathered enough clips to make a short film/video. I didn’t really know anything about editing, so my friend Matt Richardson of Bear Pond Productions gave me a crash course on Final Cut Pro and got me started. Photography will always be my first love, but this new medium has changed the way I view things and made me slow down in a way that reminds me of shooting 120 or 4X5 film.

Here is the finished piece. Enjoy. -Shem

Mikey Welsh 1971-2011

I knew Mikey Welsh for less than three years. We became friends after the first time I photographed him in his studio along with some of his abstract paintings. One of my fondest memories of hanging with Mikey is seeing a Dinosaur Jr. show at Higher Ground. He hadn’t been going to see any bands at the time, but he was excited to see Lou Barlow who he had toured with in the past. We went upstairs before the show and Mikey introduced me to Lou. They talked for a few minutes catching up on their lives outside of the music world. It was good to see Mikey smiling and engaging.

The last time I saw Mikey was August 25th at a fundraiser for the Burlington Skatepark. We gave each other a big hug and talked about what we were working on and how we were doing in our lives. Mikey was creating art every day and it felt like his work was turning a corner and taking on a new style. Although he seemed tired, it felt like he was striving to stay on a path of positivity.

When I heard the news of Mikey’s passing I was sad and angry. I’ve spent the past week thinking about him every day. Mikey’s death has affected me more than I thought it would. We may not have been best friends, but we became close and I admired his passion for creating art daily. At night, I sit here at my computer looking at photos I shot of him in his studio with his artwork. It’s difficult to think about his family and friends who are hurting because he is gone. It hurts to know that we won’t see him in this world anymore.

I hope he’s in a beautiful place now. A place without darkness, without demons, without fear. I hope he’s busy creating new art and that we’ll see him in the next world. Paint in Peace Mikey.

Can I Get an Amen?

A few weeks ago my friend Dennis Healy told me that his wife wrote her first book and that it will be published in June 2012 by NAL/Penguin. He then asked me if I’d be interested in shooting some portraits of her for the “About the Author” page in the book. I was honored and said, “Sure!”

We met the following week at their home and I spent a couple of hours shooting Sarah and Dennis with their three boys and dog in their backyard, then moved on to shooting some portraits in the house. The session was very relaxed and Sarah was a natural in front of the camera.

The name of Sarah’s book is “Can I Get an Amen?” and is the story of a divorced & unemployed woman who moves back home, while her Mother attempts to convince her to find Jesus.

Raise the Gnar

This past Friday I went to Maglianero cafe in Burlington, Vermont for a fundraiser called “Raise The Gnar”. The Burlington Skatepark Coalition along with Maven organized a night of skating, music, and a silent art auction to raise money for a new concrete skatepark to be built by Grindline. Although progress in raising funds for the new park has been a challenge, the turnout for Raise the Gnar was high and if all goes well the park will be finished by summer/fall of 2012.

The mini ramp session was charged with raw energy brought from local skaters Seth Neary, Jill Viggiani, Lee Bryan, Brian Klieber, Richie Bowen, David Wood from Talent skatepark & shop and a handful of other rippers.

Art was donated from Chris Pastras of Stereo skateboards, Jay Howell, Chris Partelow & Michael Coleman.

Thanks to everyone who attended and to the three bands that played and kept the crowd amped. I’m sorry I can’t remember your names… Barbacoa?
